Pastor’s Pen July 2020

Dear Members and Friends:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

We’re well into summer already!  Every year that passes, the high heat and humidity seems to bother me a bit more.  So now I’m staying in as much as possible because of high heat and because of the pandemic.  We’re into the fifth month of the Covid-19 pandemic; we haven’t gotten through the first wave even though more and more businesses are opening – more out of necessity for tax revenue than anything else – as is plainly obvious from the spike in new infections and hospital admissions in many states. We still have to wear masks, stay at least six feet apart, and stay home as much as possible.  I’ll remind us all (including me) that this is a marathon, not a sprint.  If the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 through 1920 is a guide, we have not reached the halfway point yet.  So, take deep breaths and keep praying.  God is with us!

At the June Zoom meeting the council appointed the Re-Opening Planning Team.  People have been thinking and working on various dimensions of our plans for a few months, but now there is a more formal structure.  Team members are Jon Soltesz, Jackie Smith, Bev Grazioli, Denise Porter, Rosanne Scassero, Krissy Soltesz, Natalie Houwen, and myself.  A report will be presented to the council in July.  St. Paul’s will continue to be VERY CAREFUL as we consider when and how to re-open.  We will be a leader in this area by caring for one another and for our neighbors.

We all owe a BIG THANK YOU to Jon and Denise for starting and upgrading our live stream worship technology; and to Rosanne, Bev, Jackie, Krissy for serving every Sunday.

I will offer a Summer Zoom Bible Study on four evenings 7:00-8:00 pm: 16 & 23 July and 5 & 12 August.  The topic will be Hymns of Comfort.  This short study was written by Marilyn Stulken, who was the organist of my home congregation, St. Paul’s, Pittsford, NY, when I was growing up!  Please call the church office and ask Rosanne for an email or print copy of the study – so that we can all be ready each week.

I’ve missed seeing you all every week and continue to remember you in my prayers and, I thank you for yours.  I look forward to the day we can again safely gather in person.  God’s peace be with you.

Your partner in the Gospel,

Pastor Elaine
